چکیده
Mid-infrared observations of the central source of NGC 1068 have been obtained with a spatial resolution in the deconvolved image of 0.1 ′′ (∼7 pc). The central source is extended by ∼1 ′′ in the north-south direction but appears un-resolved in the east-west direction over most of its length. About two-thirds of its flux can be ascribed to a core structure which is itself elongated north-south and does not show a distinct unresolved compact source. The source is strongly asymmetric, extending significantly further to the north than to the south. The morphology of the mid-infrared emission appears similar to that of the radio jet, and has features which correlate with the images in [OIII]. Its 12.5–24.5 µm color temperature ranges from 215 to 260K and does not decrease smoothly with distance from the core. Silicate absorption is strongest in the core and to the south and is small in the north. The core, apparently containing two-thirds of the bolometric luminosity of the inner 4 ′′ diameter area, may be explained by a thick, dusty torus near the central AGN viewed at an angle of ∼65 • to its plane. There are, however, detailed difficulties with existing models, especially the narrow east-west width of the thin extended mid-infrared " tongue " to the north of the core. We interpret the tongue as reprocessed visual and ultraviolet radiation that is strongly beamed and that originates in the AGN.

Positioning the near - infrared versus optical emission peaks in NGC 1068 with adaptive optics ?
The nuclear region of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 has been mapped in the near-infrared, from 1.25 to 2.23 µm, with the ESO adaptive optic system COME-ON+, at a spatial resolution of about 0.5. Imaging was carried out in the standard J, H, K spectral bands. In addition, simultaneous imaging in the near-infrared (K band) and in the visible (I band) was performed to accurately locate the emission ...
متن کاملThe First Spatially Resolved Mid-IR Spectra of NGC 1068 Obtained at Diffraction-limited Resolution with LWS at Keck I Telescope
We present spatially resolved mid-IR spectra of NGC 1068 with a diffractionlimited resolution of 0.25 using the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) at the Keck I telescope. The mid-infrared image of NGC 1068 is extended along the N-S direction. Previous imaging studies have shown the extended regions are located inside the ionization cones indicating that the mid-infrared emission arises perhaps...
متن کاملHigh-Spatial Resolution SED of NGC 1068 from Near-IR to Radio Disentangling the thermal and non-thermal contributions
We investigate the ideas that a sizable fraction of the interferometrically unresolved infrared emission of the nucleus of NGC 1068 might originate from other processes than thermal dust emission from the torus. We examine the contribution of free-free or synchrotron emissions to the central midand near-IR parsec-scale emitting region of NGC 1068. Each mechanism is constrained with parsec scale...
متن کاملAstrophysics Radiative transfer modeling of three - dimensional clumpy AGN tori and its application to NGC 1068
Recent observations of NGC 1068 and other AGN support the idea of a geometrically and optically thick dust torus surrounding the central supermassive black hole and accretion disk of AGN. In type 2 AGN, the torus is seen roughly edge-on, leading to obscuration of the central radiation source and a silicate absorption feature near 10 µm. While most of the current torus models distribute the dust...
